ESPN has been picking a redshirt freshman for each team that might surprise this year. A little bit hard to do for KU since most of the freshman from last year played as true freshman, and I would probably guess Chase Harrell here...but interesting logic from their writer on this one
Redshirt freshman to watch: Quarterback Carter Stanley
True freshman quarterback Ryan Willis was one of the bright spots of David Beaty's first season, showing promise as a passer and competitor. Yet, he's still winless as a starter so it wouldn't be wise to automatically cement Willis as the Jayhawks quarterback of the future.
The battle to become the future at quarterback for Beaty's squad remains open and Stanley should get every opportunity to compete to become the starting quarterback in the spring after spending his first semester on campus as a redshirt.
Willis was originally set to be the Jayhawks' lone quarterback in the Class of 2015 before Beaty arrived and recruited Stanley to add some competition. While Willis got thrown into the mix as a true freshman, Stanley sat on the sideline to get bigger and better prepared to play quarterback in the Big 12.
Stanley has a good feel for the Jayhawks' style of offense and has good mobility, which could be important after Kansas allowed 40 sacks in 2015, tied for No. 117 among FBS teams. The Florida native may not even see the field in 2016, but he should amp up the competition at quarterback at the very least. He'll push Willis to improve and/or even see some snaps behind center in the fall, which makes Stanley a name to keep an eye on this spring.
