Play 1 – Play action pass (from memory we nearly always run out of this formation):
Great fake by the offense and great play call. Look where the three LBs are. Don’t love that the RT has his head buried so he’s leaving a hole for that LB to come through, but the play is so wide open it doesn’t matter:
Easy completion for 17 yards and a first down:
Play 2 – Same play action, different direction:
But this time the OL doesn’t look like it is run blocking at all (compare this picture to the second picture on the previous play). So either the OL is not selling this very well, or Montell/the RB are wasting their time with the fake hand off. I’m going physical mistake for OL:
Now we still get a completion for 3 yards, but imagine in this picture if number 30, 3, and 1 are all sucked up to the OL like they were last play and our receiver has the whole middle to try and break a tackle or at worst get 5 or 6 yards instead of 3:
Play 3 – Inside Zone/Bubble Read. Both the run and the bubble appear to be open. Personally I’d rather hand it off, but either one should be ok:
As you can see here, the RB has a solid hole to run through even though our LT got beat, but we throw the bubble who also has a lot of room to work with:
Quiv has been getting a lot of crap, but the last two games he’s blocked very well. Here’s another example which allows us to get 5 yards:
Play 4 – Drop Back Pass. WVU is bringing 6 (OL responsible for squared LB’s, RB for the circled LB):
Great pickup by the OL and RB, and good throw by Cozart for the first down:
Play 5 – Drop Back Pass:
No blitz, but a bad/early snap (mental mistake Ribordy):
So I know everyone got on Montell on this play a lot for throwing it away when it appears Quiv is open and he’s not under pressure. However, I’ll give him a break because if you see the picture above, the first full second of the play his head is down picking up the ball. He’s had no time to read the defense or tell where the pressure is coming from (or if there’s a blitz to his back side). So they always say don’t let one mistake turn into two so I’m ok with him throwing it away here, because at best we get 2 yards and Quiv gets blown up.
