This article is a couple of days old, but at the end there are a couple of paragraphs where David Beaty talks about how he convinced Todd Graham to teach him what they were doing on offense at WVU (while noting Graham was a defensive coach). Then of course there is the fact that Beaty's first college job was working under Graham when he was at Rice.

I find it interesting because something I am probably most curious about this upcoming season is what kind of offense they run. I know we have heard air raid with a twist and up tempo a lot, but what will it look like and who all will get the ball in this offense?

When talking about Montell Cozart, it is important that this offense caters to his strengths. He showedsome accuracy in HS and he has some decent athleticism. It does seem like he struggles with play recognition quickly (which can improve with more experience) and the long ball. So thinking about that, I am wondering if what Graham has been doing at Arizona State will work for what KU has.

The first thing is that Arizona State definitely uses the QB in the run game. It varies, but it is not uncommon for the QB to run the ball for about 10 times a game (sometimes more, sometimes less). That may be a lot for Cozart, but do think that is doable. Now for passing, I noticed that Arizona State was top 40 in terms of passing yards per attempt. They were around top 50 for completion percentage, so this number looks about right. However, there wasn't a ton of really deep passes for TDs - only two TDs were catches of 50+ yards this past year, of which I would guess there was a few YAC yards. The reason for that was their QB Taylor Kelly wasn't known for hsi arm strength...something they catered their offense toward, which I think would be the case here.

I could see the offense going a number of different ways. When you combine that both Beaty and Likes have worked under guys like Graham, Sumlin, and Dykes you could have anything from total air raid to more spread like QB run game. The beauty is that this is pretty flexible and means you can adjust the offense to fit a QBs strengths. I see some value in that with respect to what could possibly happen under Cozart - make the offense simple and don't make him do things he can't do...he has a chance then...
