Quick Take: KU called Doug Emilien the day after he went into the portal. This was someone they have been targeting since day one.

Rob Ianello started talking with him in the beginning and then Terrence Samuel combined to help recruit him.

I heard the coaches at Minnesota gave Emilien very good reviews to college coaches who called them about Emilien from his ability to attitude. They did not want Emilien to leave because they felt he had a good future.

But it was a numbers game where Minnesota returned Chris Autumn-Bell, Michael Brown-Stephens, Daniel Jackson, and Dylan Wright. Their top four wideouts were all coming back and most of them were are underclassmen.

Emilien just wanted a new beginning. He heard good things about KU from Ky Thomas. He said is very close with Thomas.

Breakdown: Emilien usually lined up as the outside receiver in high school. I don’t know if Minnesota was moving him to another area in their scheme.

He said Samuel told him he likes how aggressive and physical he plays. When you watch the film, he doesn’t go down easy. He breaks of two touchdown runs where it looked like he was on the ground, but he kept his balance.

He’s 6-foot-1, 190 pounds so he isn’t a small target. But he plays fast for that size.

What it means: I don’t know if the staff adjusted their board, but I expect Emilien to be the only receiver taken from the portal. Those plans can always change but I think that’s where it stands.

The KU staff had a great resource with Ky Thomas who could give them intel how Emilien handled himself on and off the field.
