My brother and I (a fellow Slanter) wanted all of you to know what a great person we have in charge of our football program. Our mother has battled cancer for several years and it was clear over the past few weeks her battle was coming to an end. Coach Beaty was made aware of her condition and very soon afterward he called our mother and had a long conversation which started with Coach Beaty telling my father when he answered the phone that he understood there was a very tough woman there he'd like to speak with. They spoke several minutes and he gave Mom his cell number and encouraged her to call him anytime.
Yesterday we were surprised when a KU football helmet was delivered to their home. The helmet was signed by Coach Beaty and inscribed with "Rock Chalk!" We realize Coach Self has done something very similar recently and we know how lucky we are to have him in heading our basketball program. It has meant a great deal to our family that Coach Beaty would take time for our family, especially during the season. We all want wins and we're convinced, in time, they will come. For now it's been a great deal of comfort to our family that he would take the time to brighten a very sick lady's day. That very wonderful lady passed this morning.
