I can no longer call it the left wing wet dream. Some conservatives, notably Jim Baker, whose career spans decades with Reagan and both of the Bush presidencies have now come out in favor of the tax and so-called dividend. Going to the website of one its promoters is an exercise in double talk but very educational.

The carbon tax is called a simplified method to market price carbon. It would overnight increase the cost of nearly everything in the economy based on even limited use of fossil fuels. The tax would be raised annually. The consumer is to be told - but wait! - your government will return its costs to you.

What is not discussed in open forums by its proponents is the small print details. A new government bureaucracy would be formed to administer the tax. Every household would be required to fill out and file a detailed form every year to be eligible for the so-called dividend. In addition, the proposed formula would reduce the so-called dividend to those deemed by income and personal possessions to use more carbon. After using the proposed formula on one of the websites, this would include many middle class families and go up from there. A rude example of the formula would penalize families where both spouses use a vehicle to go to work.

A simple and easy way to price carbon is to phase out tax subsidies for fossil fuel extraction and production. No new bureaucracy needed. Market is induced to price carbon. Consumers would be free to make choices without worrying about yet another government form to file each year.

Fortunately, most Republicans and a few Democrats recognize the carbon tax/dividend scam and its chances of approval anytime soon are dim. Fire away. Let's debate.
