He received the Congessional Gold Medal yesterday. His accomplishments are too long for this space. He nearly died after machine gun fire in 1945 riddled his body. Three years and seven surgeries later he recovered without full use of his right arm. He is a real governing conservative and served his country that way. His leadership of the Senate is the stuff of legends. He guided 70% of the Reagan agenda to approval. He compromised to get things done. One of my favorite quotes from him is, “In politics, honorable compromise is no sin. It is what protects us from absolutism and intolerance.” He remains at 94 a staunch conservative partisan. He also remains as a man who puts country ahead of blind partisanship. Congrats, Senator, patriot. You more than earned this award.
