Will try to give a brief rundown of what the guys had to say. First off, Beaty did not stay long. His daughter had a dance performance he needed to attend.
Beaty was very enthusiastic while there. Typical things such as praising the fans for their importance and Zenger for being so committed to the program.
He spoke to the recruits by saying we brought in a very good class. He says they do not recruit by stars or stripes. They recruit by their knowledge of whether the guy is a player or not. He spoke to the O-Line and D-Line by saying they like guys with big butts and these guys they brought in have some really big butts. Mentioned Hughes as a guy who went from 265 when he arrived in Lawrence to 305 recently.
He said we did what the kids on the roster needed most last year. We gave them experience.
He introduced the new coaches, Phillips and Bradford. Said the Phillips might have been with something in mind concerning Kubiak. Not sure what he meant unless he suspected he might leave. Then said he called Bradford last year but timing was not right. He thought the new housing would be a big help in recruiting.
Zenger took some questions and explained the order of things was Rockchalk Park, then BB Housing, then Debruce Center. Next is sprucing up Anderson and then full bore on Stadium. Made a strong point that they will do what helps the players first since that has more impact on recruiting. He said all the players want out of the Stadium is 50000 fans screaming loud. Players don't care where the fans eat or pee.
Bowen handled the majority of the meeting. One question I remember well was his answer to why the KSU staff can add so many more walk ons than we can. He stated two points. Everyone has the same limitations on walk ons due to total numbers, 85 scholies and 105 with walk ons. He then said if someone is having more than a total of 20 walk ons their scholarship players must not be panning out.
Had the good fortune of visiting with Mel Schadler, Ryan's Dad. Very nice man. Banker. I think in Hesston, but not sure. A couple of his customers were killed in the recent attack there. As for Ryan, he came to KU last year at 185 and finished the year at 175. Has added 20 lbs so far and is now at 195 and aiming for 200. All his lifts are up a lot as well and he is maintaining his speed. Hopes to be able to go no lower than 190-195 during the year next Fall.
Not many questions asked tonight. Beaty took three and left. Bowen was only asked about the same.
Once again, Beaty is shouting praise for these new coaches. He insists guys are lined up to coach at KU, not because of him but because it is KU and the AD is so committed to FB. He is is love with the Phillips hire.
Forgot to mention, he announced Perry as RC and says no one is better at it.
