I have been using the app more in the last few days and it is definitely faster than just running the normal browsing on mobile site.
They have done some tweaks and it is faster. On Android they have also added swipe left and right to view stories. They also added a clear notifications button to get rid of the old ones.
The old text messaging is gone. The new way to get breaking news or key stories is downloading the app through push notifications. Even if you don't browse through the app you can use it for notifications.
The iOS update is coming in the next week
