A few months back I asked for prayers for my extended family member with stage 4 cancer, Rick Alvarez. Well, Rick passed yesterday surrounded by his loved ones. I wanted to thank those that took the time to express their support on here.
I also wanted to share a story. After Rick shared the news of his illness, I was wondering how I could make a small impact in his last days, to perhaps bring him some joy while he fought the good fight. I had recently became a WF member and began buying my own Football Season Tickets. I decided to contact my Rep. Chris Forte, to see if the WF or Athletic Department could send out something to Rick. Now Rick wasn't a member, but was a lifelong fan, so I appealed to Chis. To his credit he didn't dismiss the idea and went to work. A couple of days later he called and told me he had arranged a "Care Package" to be sent out to Rick.
I called Ricks wife Rachael to be on the lookout for a package. She called a few days later totally excited and said how thrilled Rick was to receive this package. In it was some KU swag including a KU throw he used everyday to keep warm, but the ultimate best thing was a note of encouragement hand written by Coach Beatty. To say the least Rick was blown away!!! To be honest, so was I. I was never so proud to be a Jayhawk as I was that day. That letter meant so much to Rick. The family had it mounted and it stayed next to Rick everyday, and hung on the wall next to his bed as he was able to be at home his last days with the help of Hospice.
Rick is like a lot of KU supporters, they don't have the ability to donate or buy tickets, but live or die by the fortunes of the Jayhawks.
Again thank you for your support here, I will never doubt we made the right choice in our Football Coach, a great human being.
