Lean years ahead

http://www2.kusports.com/news/2022/feb/03/ku-athletic-director-predicts-some-challenging-fin/

Looks like we will be heading into some tough financial situations as an institution here very soon.

I appreciate Goff just plain stating we're probably going backwards on our media distribution with Texas and Oklahoma.
I've heard other schools/their media sources blowing smoke and saying we'll stay about the same payout wise.

Hopefully we can weather the storm and prove the league is worth the money and not have it chip at our programs over time.

An energy conundrum

The Biden Administration from day one has moved to curb domestic oil and gas production and pipeline distribution. The same Administration has now asked cutthroat OPEC to increase output as a way to ease galloping gasoline and diesel prices at the pump. OPEC said nope. The only consistency of politicians is inconsistency. Long term of course fossil fuel use must be phased out. However, voters already in a bad mood will remember this next November if high prices persist, regardless of the market price controls of OPEC. Perception becomes reality at the polls. And the Democrats are already reeling from last Tuesday‘s slap in the face. High energy prices will be a killer. History records the famous 1980 quote from Reagan about Carter as energy prices and inflation were soaring - “Are you better off now than you were four years ago?” Carter was sent home that November by angry voters. Don’t kill the messenger.

Jan 2022 Jobs Report

lmao

Employers added 467,000 jobs despite millions out sick during the Omicron surge. For reference, this is absolutely stunning. The general consensus was speculation about just how bad it would be. In the end despite eroding worker benefits, a federal min wage that hasn't moved in well over a decade, and a pandemic, the labor market is actually fairly strong and will only get stronger as pandemic wanes.

@knaup1 please explain how this could be with a Democrat in office and control of Congress (when Manchin and Sinema allows it) for just over a year.

Goff on infractions

Goff also addressed a few other items with the group:

— He said there was little information he could share about the status of KU’s NCAA infractions case regarding possible rules violations of the men’s basketball program. He called the case a “cloud that has been hanging over our heads” for nearly four years.

“I do anticipate there is a great opportunity in 2022 to move forward and put that behind us,” Goff said. “So I have allowed myself 10 months, but I really am optimistic based on my first 10 months that we will in 2022 move forward through that and will have a plan in place to make sure we navigate any of the challenges it brings successfully.”

Thorneman79's Obituary

Dustin David Thorne
1979-2022

Services for Dustin David Thorne, 42, Lawrence, will be 10am Saturday, February 12, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

In deepest sorrow, we announce that Dustin David Thorne, our beloved son, brother, family member and friend, passed away on February 1, 2022 while in the hospital.

Dustin was born August 9, 1979 and grew up in Fayetteville, Arkansas and attended Fayetteville High School. He moved to Kansas in 1996 and graduated from Jeff West High School in 1997. Dustin attended the IBEW electrical apprenticeship technical school in Topeka where in five years he earned his journeyman license.

On October 10, 2004, Dustin was severely injured in an ATV accident rendering him totally paralyzed. In his 17 years as a quadriplegic, Dustin showed great strength and courage through his advocacy to other paralyzed individuals sharing his story and words of wisdom. He loved KU basketball and KC Chiefs football, and always kept the Arkansas Razorbacks near to his heart. He belonged to many online group clubs which included a chess club that he shared with his Uncle Jack, and a KU Sports group. Dustin always had an encouraging word and never gave up on anyone, especially himself.

Dustin is survived by his mother, Bonnie Wiest and her husband, Butch; Bill Thorne and his wife (Sarah), his brother, Christopher Robeson and his wife Straucie, his stepbrothers Cory Wiest and Dylan Wiest (Mariah), his aunt, Debbie Dechant and her husband, Bob, his uncle and aunt, Jack and Margrit Thorne, his niece Lilly Dobbs, and many others including uncles, aunts and cousins. Dustin loved and appreciated his caregivers over the years, especially Linda who devoted so much of her own time in taking care of him, especially during his most difficult days. He trusted her and loved her.

Dustin was strong in his faith and went peacefully as Jesus called him home. He spent many quiet times alone in prayer. Those who knew Dustin, even if just for a little time, loved him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Rumsey‐Yost Funeral Home & Crematory, in care of Dustin D. Thorne in the memo.

John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

RIP TO THORNEMAN79

I meant to post this earlier, so let me apologize now for the delay. I saw on the football board (https://kansas.forums.rivals.com/threads/rip-thoreman79.103088/page-2#post-2007733) that a valuable member of our JayhawkSlant.com community and overall great man, Thorneman79, recently passed away. I didn't know Thorneman79 outside of this site, but I can tell you that he brought a lot to this community with his personality. I've had my fair share of struggles the past couple of years, and on a number of occasions, Thorneman79 reached out via private message with words of support. I can tell you when my dad passed away, Thorneman79 was one of the first people to contact me.

Again, I didn't know Thorneman79 outside of JayhawkSlant.com, but if anybody here knows his family, please let them know that we're all thinking about them during this most difficult time. Please, send them many thoughts and prayers, along with much love. Man, my heart hurts when I think about Thorneman79 leaving us. Take care and best wishes, my friend. You might be gone, but never forgotten.

Off Topic Brings back memories

I can’t believe we did this, but did anyone else take the trays out of the KU cafeteria and go sledding down the hill when they were at KU. I don’t even remember what we did with the trays when we were done, but boy it was fun. We had a bunch of snow when I was at KU. I don’t believe that has been the case in the last 35 years. I don’t believe they ever cancelled classes due to snow while I was going to school.
