Why is Trump consistently and repeatedly meddling in the affairs of charged or convicted servicemen - especially Gallagher - that are brought up on war crimes. It's not a love of the military, as he's shown repeatedly that ethic isn't in him. Is it simply him responding to reports on Fox, since many of his decisions came after Fox ran a piece on Gallagher? Is it window dressing to look like a friend of the military's? You now have the Secretary of Defense having to resign over Trump meddling.
