On Wednesday night, West Virginia defeated Kansas State, 73-67 in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament at T-Mobile Arena in Kansas City, Mo. In advancing to the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament, the Mountaineers were led by Sean McNeil (21) and Malik Curry (17).

At halftime of Wednesday night's Big 12 Tournament opener, West Virginia led Kansas State, 38-34 at the half, and outscored the Wildcats by just two points, 35-33 in the second half.

Aside from McNeil (21) and Curry (17), Taz Sherman (9), Jalen Bridges (7), Pauly Paulicap (6), Kedrian Johnson (5), Dimon Carrigan (2), Gabe Osabiohien (2), and Isiah Cottrell (2) also scored for West Virginia.

As a team, West Virginia shot 28-of-53 (52.8%) from the field, 6-of-16 (37.5%) from behind the arc, and 11-of-14 (78.6%) from the free-throw line. WVU won the battle on the glass, 33-28, and dished out 13 assists to 14 turnovers.

Against Kansas State, West Virginia scored 32 points in the paint, 18 points off turnovers, six second-chance points, 11 fast break points, and 29 points off the bench.

Defensively, West Virginia limited Kansas State to just 41.8 percent shooting (23-of-55) from the field and 36.7 percent shooting (11-of-30) from behind the arc.


Kansas vs. West Virginia:

Kansas, the No. 1 seed in the Big 12 Tournament, will face West Virginia, the No. 9 seed, in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament at 2:00 p.m. (CT) on Thursday afternoon. In two meetings this season. Bill Self’s squad posted a perfect 2-0 record against Bob Huggins and the Mountaineers.

On January 15, Kansas defeated West Virginia, 85-59 in Lawrence. Offensively, the Jayhawks were led by Jalen Wilson, who scored 23 points, pulled down eight rebounds, and dished out five assists.

Ochai Agbaji tallied 20 points, pulled down seven rebounds, and was credited with two steals, while David McCormack finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Kansas, on February 19, defeated West Virginia, 71-58 in Morgantown. Leading 33-27 at the half, Self’s squad outscored WVU, 38-31 in the second half and, in doing so, moved to 11-2 in Big 12 play.

In Morgantown, Kansas was led by Agbaji (23), McCormack (19), and Wilson (10).


News and Notes:

Kansas has won 15 conference tournament championships, including 11 in the Big 12. The Jayhawks last won the event in 2018, also at T-Mobile Center. Kansas is 47-12 in the Big 12 event; is 1-0 in opening-round games, 21-3 in the quarterfinals, 14-6 in semifinals, and 11-3 in finals.

Kansas is the No. 1 seed for the Big 12 Championship for the 17th time (1997,-98-2002-03-07-09-10-11-12-13-14-15-16-17-18-20-22). KU is 31-7 as the No. 1 seed and has won eight of its 11 Big 12 tourney titles as the No. 1 seed. Note, KU was the No. 1 seed in 2020 when the tourney was canceled due to COVID.

In 2022, Kansas won its 20th Big 12 regular-season title and its 63rd all-time conference regular-season championship, which added to its record.

Kansas is No. 7 in the NET rankings and No. 6 in strength of schedule, released by the NCAA through games played March 7. Kansas is 10-5 against Quadrant 1 teams, 7-1 vs. Q2, 5-0 vs. Q3, and 3-0 vs. Q4. Its 10 Q1 wins are second-most in NCAA Division I.
